Jesus on the cross highlights our sin. Every bit of his suffering was because of our sins. At the same time, Jesus on the cross highlights God’s love, that it’s Jesus suffering and dying instead of us, because in his great mercy, Jesus substituted himself for us. As he declares, “It is finished,” the payment for sin is complete, and so we call this Friday…good.

God has made a one-sided covenant: Jesus came in humble service to shed his blood and make peace between sinners and God. All this is given by grace through faith.

It’s the beginning of Holy Week. Jesus enters Jerusalem just as the prophet had said he would: riding on a donkey, demonstrating humility, as he was bent on giving everything to save us.
